On the west bank of the Maas, there used to be the Frederik Hendrik barracks. Beneath the ground, across from the old Venlo fortress, lay a large defensive structure for centuries: the Spanish Fort Sint-Michiel. Construction began on September 29, 1641. It was a massive earthen fort, about the size of 40 football fields.
In the winter of 1646, the State Army besieged the fort for the first time, as Frederik Hendrik tried to capture Venlo. Over the centuries, there were many battles, and the fort was frequently changed. Different rulers, such as the French, restored and modified it until it eventually lost its purpose. From 1867 onwards, it gradually disappeared.
Since 2024, there has been renewed interest in the fort and the barracks. The area is undergoing significant work to uncover the old walls. In the Kazernekwartier, historical sections are being restored, making these old places in Blerick visible again and part of a new residential area.
PLEASE NOTE: The location is on the Venrayseweg, along the cycle path, which runs in front of the former Frederik Hendrik barracks.
