Castle Nunhem

Places of interest

Not much is known about the old Nunhem castle. It used to stand on a moat and in the beginning of the 18th century it was replaced by a new country house.

Castle Nunhem provided shelter to expelled nuns from Ommen in Brabant in 1732. The nuns took the Mary Mercy statue with them to Numhem, which only returned to Ommen in 1840. The next owner was a Rotterdam businessman, who started a seed distribution company there.

Unfortunately, this castle was destroyed by a fire in 1947 and only ruins remained. The old outer walls were used in the restoration. Today, the castle is in use by Nunhems Netherlands BV, the vegetable seed processing company of chemical conglomerate BASF.
